Hierdie is die eerste draft van ‘n kinderboek waarmee ek besig is… Die sketse is nog in wording.
This is Poppin. She is a girl. Although this is a very obvious fact, it is maybe the most important thing about her. For as the saying goes she really is made of sugar and spice and everything nice.
For her birthday last year Poppin’s parents gave her a little cotton rabbit. They chose this particular stuffed animal because it had looked so innocent sitting in the corner of the dusty toy shop. Little did they know what they were letting themselves in for.
For as sweet and innocent as Poppin was, so mischievous was the little rabbit and lately he had been getting Poppin in all kinds of trouble.
Last week, while Dad was baking a cake, he had knocked over the milk and broken four eggs.
And just yesterday he got Poppin’s bed all muddy because he had been playing in the rain all day.
Poppin’s parents were starting to blame her for the trail of destruction she left behind wherever she and the rabbit went. But the more she told them it was the rabbit’s fault, the angrier they got.
Something had to be done. Poppin stayed up all night trying to figure out why the rabbit kept getting her in trouble.
Maybe he got lonely when she was asleep and got up to look for some friends. And because it’s dark and everyone knows that rabbit’s can’t see in the dark, he kept bumping into things and knocking them over.
After a while, Poppin found the answer. It was his arms and legs! They were unusually long for such a small rabbit. He was not trying to get her in trouble, he was just swinging his arms and legs around like happy little rabbits do.
The next morning Poppin decided to take matters into her own hands. She borrowed her Dad’s Handy-Hand scissors and cut the rabbit’s arms and legs shorter. She tied the ends closed with some ribbon, because she didn’t want the rabbit to lose any of his stuffing.
Poppin was thrilled. Now she and the rabbit could play wherever they wanted and her parents were pleased because for once their house was clean (except for the occasional grape juice spill).
But Poppin started to notice a change in the rabbit. His ears didn’t stand up straight like they used to and he didn’t enjoy finger painting anymore. The rabbit was very sad and he looked so silly swinging around his stumpy little arms and legs.
Now another thing about girls is that they are very clever, so Poppin immediately knew what to do. She took some bells and tied them to the end of the ribbons on the rabbit’s arms and legs.
Nowadays the rabbit can hop and dance wherever he wants and whenever he swings his arms everyone can hear him coming and clear the way.
